The Jones family of Frongoy have an unbroken link in the breeding of Welsh Ponies and Cobs of Section A, C and D of the Welsh Stud Book since 1936. The river ARTH which flows through the pasture land has inspired the prefix FRONARTH which has justifiably gained itself a world-wide reputation. The stud is synonymous with the legendary names of Mathrafal, Cahn Dafydd, Fronarth What Ho, Brenin Dafydd, Lleucu Queen, Gwelfro Tywysog, Cyttir Telynor, Fronarth Welsh Model & Fronarth Boneddiges .
Photo shows Mathrafal f.1936 (Mab Y Brenin x Poll of Golfa) who was purchased by the Fronarth Stud at eighteen years old in 1954 and whose influence at Frongoy and indeed the Welsh Cob as a whole cannot be overstated.
All of the George Prince of Wales winners at Fronarth are descended from Mathrafal, (via Cahn Dafydd, Brenin Dafydd or Golden Sunshine) and the benefit of his show winning blood continues to be seen at Fronarth today in the offspring they themselves are producing / have produced.
The dark bay mare Bryn Arth Pride f.1948 (Brenin Gwalia x Blaenwaun Flora Temple) can be considered to be the foundation of the stud that exists today. As well as producing a filly by a son of Mathrafal (namely Fronarth Lady f.1960 x Cahn Dafydd), she also produced 3 fillies by Mathrafal himself: Fronarth Flash (1955), Flora (1956) & Flora Temple (1959) Flora going on to produce Brenin Dafydd and featuring in the pedigree of all bar one of the 6 Welsh Cobs that have won the George Prince of Wales Cup at the Royal Welsh. (Cyttir Telynor who won twice being the exception).
Mathrafal's direct descendents had great success in the show ring: the following all winning at the Royal Welsh: Llwynog-y-Garth, Cefn Parc Boy, Pentre Rainbow, Tyngwndwn Cream Boy as well as the mares Parc Lady & Tyhen Mattie. To this day, his bloodlines and influence continue to be seen in many of the George Prince of Wales winners at the Royal Welsh.
